Is there a more exciting team in the NFL right now than the Cleveland Browns. The dawg pound is certainly barking quite loud. After a 7-8-1 season which seen them narrowly missed out on the playoffs, they went all out in the off-season, adding one of the best wideouts in the NFL in Odell Beckham Jr, who will be paired with his college running mate Jarvis ‘Juice’ Landry. Not to mention the addition of Kareem Hunt, who should form a formidable back field duo with 2nd year man Nick Chubb.
However, none of this excitement would have been possible if it wasn’t for the selection of Baker Mayfield with the first pick in last years draft. Mayfield was spectacular once he took over from Tyrod Taylor, and provided a real spark for the offence. Whilst he is a sneaky good athlete, he rarely used his feet last season and failed to run any into the end-zone. So it terms of an anytime touchdown scorer, he just isn’t on the radar right now.
A player very much on the radar is Nick Chubb, after supplanting Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson, he went on to rush for nearly 1,000 yards and 10 scores (2 receiving touchdowns) in just 10 starts. Kareem Hunt will be serving an 8 game suspension to start the season, so odds dependant I can see Chubb be heavily backed to start the season. Once Hunt returns it will be a case of wait and see, in terms of just how happy they can keep both guys.
Whilst Landry was targeted 149 times last season, he only converted 4 of those into scores, so at the moment he is very much a player to avoid, especially when you see his odds floating around evens. The same can’t be said for OBJ, who has been a prolific touchdown scorer in his career thus far, scoring 44 times in 59 games, which makes him a much more attractive option. Rishard Higgins and Antonio Callaway could both offer some sneaky returns with most defensive having to focus on the two LSU stars.
David Njoku had a decent sophomore season, but when you see him play you can’t help but think there’s so much more to come, especially when you consider he will be just 23 entering his 3rd season. Thus far in his career he has scored 8 times in 32 starts so unless you see odds over 6/1 you may want to steer clear….. for now.
